About Directorate of Medical Education Assam (DME Assam)
Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, was the pioneer to start Health Education and human administrations in Assam. He developed a remedial school known as ‘Berry White Medical School’ at Dibrugarh, Assam in 1898-99. In course of time this remedial school was upgraded and on third Nov. 1947 the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was set up and it stays as the foremost restorative school in Assam.
With extending demands for social protection and prosperity guidance, the necessity for dynamically remedial colleges in Assam was certainly felt. Mr. B.P. Chaliha headed the State Government in 1959, the then Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, then Finance Minister, and Mr. Rupram Brahma as the then Medical Minister of Assam decided to have a subsequent helpful school in Assam. On seventh Nov. 1959, the State Government set up an expert gathering to go into the issue and present their report.
